About the Fund
Benjamin’s Fund is CoastView Veterinary Hospital’s special segment of The Veterinary Care Charitable Fund® which is a program created by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) to provide veterinarians with a simple and effective way to offer charitable veterinary services to clients facing personal hardships as well as a means to support animals who are injured or rescued from abuse and neglect. Enrolled veterinary hospitals, including CoastView Veterinary, now have a way to offer low or no-cost services to clients who qualify for assistance through The Veterinary Care Charitable Fund.

On a more personal note, Dr. Laura Schultz shares a little bit of her story about her beloved hound dog, Benjamin.
Benjamin entered our lives in November 1999. He was only 10 weeks old when we adopted him from a family farm out in Floyd County, VA. Actually, he chose us because he declined food in order to continue getting love from me and Adam, my husband.
Our lives changed, dramatically, that snowy night and we should have known he would test us in many ways considering his first day with us was spent at the ER Vet getting a health certificate to travel back to FL with Adam. We really had no idea what we were doing then – our little budding family of three.
Ben was the best and quite possibly the worst dog all in one, but ultimately he really was my best friend through my adult life, so far. I learned more about canine behavior from him than I ever would have imagined and I am so glad he was “our first” because now I feel like I can handle most any situation.
Ben pretty much lived our military lifestyle with us. He traveled the world with us and was a trooper through the multiple quarantines and moves. He was my buddy and my protector when Adam was deployed. He watched our family grow from the three of us to four, five, six and then even seven. And he continued to be our protector through everything.
It is impossible to convey how devastated we were to lose Ben, but at the same time, I know how blessed we were to have had him in our lives for so long. Who really gets almost 17 years with their beloved furry companion?
Rest in peace my sweet boy – you are home and I will see you again one day. Continue your charge of protector because now you have Samantha and Emma to watch over and love. You are forever mine and in my heart.
